Ski Fit

This is the title of a ski conditioning article in the November Enjoy Magazine. The gist of the article written by Thom Gabrukiewicz following an interview with me is that conditioning of the core is very important in preparing for the slopes.

One key point of the article is that doing crunches (spinal flexion)does not constitute a core conditioning program. Core conditioning should also include stabilization exercises (such as the plank), lateral flexion, and rotation.

In addition to core conditioning, include weight training of the entire body with an emphasis on the legs, jogging, sprinting, low impact plyometrics, stair running, slide boarding, basketball, and anything else that might prepare your body for the trauma awaiting on the slopes. Try to do exercises through multiple planes of movement. Don't forget side to side movements as they are often forgotten in the gym.

Ultimately only the slope itself will prepare you for the slope, but do your homework and I guarantee you'll have a much more enjoyable time!
